Bienvenue sur IWW.org

IWW News - Sat, 05/22/2010 - 16:56

In search of legal defense against illegal trusteeships

Association for Union Democracy - Thu, 11/13/2008 - 07:00
Is it permissible for a local union to set aside money, safe from seizure by the international, so that it can be guaranteed funds to mount a legal defense against trusteeship? That question has arisen before, not in the SEIU but in the Teamsters union...

California labor intellectuals call on Andy Stern to respect constructuve dissent in SEIU.

Association for Union Democracy - Thu, 11/13/2008 - 07:00
We in California have, of course, a great deal at stake in the outcome of these disputes. The trusteeship fears of UHW seem to be very well-founded. While a clean-up of 6434 may require outside intervention, we believe that a simultaneous, unjustified take- over of 150,000 member UHW would be a disaster for the California labor movement (and SEIU nationally). In the Cause of Union Democracy

Association for Union Democracy - Thu, 11/13/2008 - 07:00
AUD board member and leading union democracy legal scholar Michael Goldberg has written about the experiences and perspectives that led him to dedicate himself to union democracy. Many important causes cry out for the moral, material, and legal support of public intellectuals, but few of those causes find their natural constituencies as isolated and vulnerable as union reformers often are... Hubert Harrison: The Voice of Harlem Radicalism, 1883-1918.

Association for Union Democracy - Thu, 11/13/2008 - 07:00
AUD supporter and longtime union activist and scholar Jeff Perry has written the biography of the foremost Black organizer, agitator, and theoretician of the Socialist Party of New York, founder of the New Negro movement, editor of Negro World, and the principal radical influence on the Garvey movement. AUD advisor Bill Fletcher praises Perry's thorough research and compelling analysis and says the book reads with a draw like that of a study of a long lost city, rediscovered and offering answers to an incomplete history. Who really controls the SEIU trusteeship hearings?

Association for Union Democracy - Fri, 10/17/2008 - 03:00
"The SEIU retained Ray Marshall, former secretary of labor, to preside over the hearings on President Stern's proposal to place the UHW-W under trusteeship. Marshall is assigned to the job so that the proceedings will presumably be impartial. But who really calls the shots? We ask this question because the OLMS office of the U.S. Labor Department wrote a request to Marshall (note: to Marshall not to the SEIU) in which it wrote: 'As you are aware, we requested that an OLMS investigator be present to observe the hearings. It is our understanding that after consultation with the SEIU International Union, you will not honor our request.'..."

Starbucks faces another NLRB complaint [AP]

IWW News - Sun, 10/05/2008 - 01:41
p uDisclaimer/u - emThe opinions of the author do not necessarily match those of the IWW. This article is reposted in accordance to Fair Use guidelines. /em /p div By LAUREN SHEPHERD - NEW YORK (AP) - Starbucks Corp. is facing another complaint from the National Labor Relations Board alleging that the gourmet coffee chain engaged in unfair labor practices by firing a barista in Michigan.br / /div div The complaint, filed last month by the Detroit office of the NLRB, stems from an investigation into a charge made by employee Cole Dorsey earlier this year. /div br / div According to the NLRB complaint, Dorsey--a member of the Industrial Workers of the World union at Starbucks--was fired June 6 from his job at a store in Grand Rapids, Mich. Before being fired, Dorsey had been given two prior disciplinary warnings by his store manager. /div br / div The complaint alleges that Dorsey received the warnings and was fired because of his quot;sympathies for and activities on behalf ofquot; the IWW Starbucks Workers Union. The union has been attempting to organize workers at the chain. /div br /pa href=http://www.iww.org/en/node/4452read more/a/p

Starbucks to Require Employee Availability Around the Clock and Cut Workforce in Major National Initiative

IWW News - Sat, 10/04/2008 - 01:41
div New York, NY- The Starbucks Coffee Co. is in the process of an extreme revamping of its workforce policies according to company documents obtained by the Starbucks Workers Union of the Industrial Workers of the World.  The initiative, dubbed quot;Optimal Schedulingquot;, will require employees to make themselves available to work essentially around the clock to obtain so-called full-time status.  Even for workers able to make the extraordinary sacrifice to obtain quot;full-timequot; status, no work hours are guaranteed- identical to Starbucks' current system of part-time status for all retail hourly workers.  In addition, Starbucks will lay off workers who cannot meet minimum availability requirements.  As baristas learn of the new program, discontent is rising. /div br / div quot;I've had to make myself available each week from Tuesday to Sunday starting at 4:45am until 11pm in the hopes of possibly getting 32 hours of work but not being guaranteed a single hour, quot; said Liberte Locke, a Starbucks barista in New York and member of the IWW Starbucks Workers Union.  quot; It's impossible for me to get a second job now even though I need one and impossible to have a life outside of work.quot; /div br / div Under the new system, baristas who opt for pseudo full-time status have to make themselves available to work 70% of the total hours their store is open during the week.  In an example given in the company documents, a store open 115 hours per week requires a barista to be available to work 80.5 hours each week - over double the standard work week.  Week-to-week Starbucks can then schedule workers anywhere within that availability.  In addition, workers who cannot make themselves available for at least three shifts a week will be fired, absent a quot;compelling reasonquot; which Starbucks has not defined.  Weekend workers must be available for at least 16 hours to avoid termination. /div br / pa href=http://www.iww.org/en/node/4451read more/a/p
