New research from the NPD Group shows that iTunes sales have exceeded those of brick-and-mortar stores Borders, Tower Records, and Sam Goody, making it the seventh largest music retailer in the U.S. In September, Apple revealed it had sold more than 600 million songs to over 10 million iTunes customers.
Here's the Top 10 List of Leading U.S. Music Retailers: 1. Wal-Mart 2. Best Buy 3. Target 4. Amazon.com 5. FYE 6. Circuit City 7. iTunes 8. Tower Records 9. Sam Goody 10. Borders.

The only time we carry music in our store (Waldens) is during the Xmas season. It is purely an impulse item. When people want to buy music the last place they are going to look is in a bookstore.
I don't really understand what your beef is since you point out that you (Waldens) only carry music during Xmas time. Meanwhile, ALL Borders stores carry a great deal of music ALL year around. It's one of the big 3 things they carry. Borders has a better music selection and more of it than most of the above stores and yet they and other 'record' stores are going under because of their over priced ways. Waldens stores don't really count in this case since as you pointed out they only carry music @ Xmas.
iTunes
I think that iTunes have gone above all expectations. It was a little side idea they had to iPod and has now taken over totally. In the future you will see many companies doing some research to find side markets for their products. I must say it is scary for the industry.
