Hello,
I would like some advice/information relating to the job application/interview process at Borders. Im am a retail sales worker of 7.5 years, and applied for a job at Borders, and was recently called back to attend an interview. The interview is to take place at a job fair located at a local hotel, and I am just wondering on what I should expect when I show up. Is this a good sign that I am or will be hired? Or since this is a job fair, will I have to submit yet another application? Will this be the only interview I will have to attend? Anyone with any information or advice I would greatly appreciate it. I apologize if these topics have repeatedly been discussed or answered, but due to some comp trouble Im only able to use my browser for about 5 minutes at a time, and have had trouble exploring the message board.
Thank You.
I don't know anything about the interview process for job fairs, but I believe every prospective Borders employee has to go through two interviews -- the first with a store supervisor, and the second with the store's general manager. It is a good sign that you were called for an interview -- Borders doesn't call in every applicant for one, just the ones that do well on the online application. It can take a while to hear back from the store you're applying to though, especially if your references are hard to get a hold of...good luck!
Hello GTT, and thanks for your reply. I am slightly nervous about my interview, mainly because I just want to do well and I would really like to be hired by Borders. So again, thank you and if anyone else has any advice or information to share for a potential "newbie", Id greatly appreciate it. Take care!
I'm guessing this is a jobfair for a new store. In that case, you will probably be among a large group of candidates. I'd recommend being friendly and outgoing, dressing nice and really focusing on customer service and selling during your interview. If this is a new store they will be filling a lot of positions - so your chances of getting a job are improved - of course this also depends on the competition. =)
I've never personally seen Borders use a job fair, so I would have to agree that you are probably applying at a new store. I can't imagine Borders would pay for a meeting room in a hotel to staff positions at an existing store. Since you've already had one interview and have been invited back, you're a long way down the road to be hired. If you hadn't done well on that silly 37 page profile on the application and if you hadn't impressed someone on the first interview, you would not have been invited to come back. I agree with the previous person, dress well, act professional, have a good grasp on the highpoints of your retailing career to this point and you should do well.
You didn't say what kind of position you were applying for, but with 7 1/2 years of retailing experience, I'm guessing you're not applying to be a bookseller or cafeseller. I'm guessing you're trying to be a manager or supervisor. Dress to that expectation level and you should be fine. If you've been in retailing that long, you should know how to dress to impress in this field. You also know what's expected in retailing, so you should be able to handle any interview question.
Good luck.
I would bring a copy of any resume you may have already submitted but your initial application should be there.
The job fairs are usually casual, as is working @ Borders. The managers are looking for what you have to offer, what you've read, and what you know.
I was interviewed three times. First, the initial interview. What are you reading, what have you read, why do you want to work here .
Call back interview was supposed to be with a GM but there was a scheduling bloop so I interviewed with the DM first (which was more like a conversation) and waited around for the GM. Again, another conversation. I was hired at that point.
Before I worked for Borders I enjoyed shopping / hanging out there. I find that working there is pretty much the same.
Borders is a relaxed place... but don't be fooled by the piercings, tattoos and disheveled clothing... we're no dummies. You have to have a brain that functions, energy, strength and be quick on the uptake.
Good luck with your interview process... I hope you enjoy working for this company as much as I do.
Thanks for the advice. Im feeling less nervous already. I mean, I pretty much know retail in and out, along with how most retail job interviews go, but all companies have their ways of doing things, different policies, etc. So I didnt want to get caught off guard by something I wouldnt expect. Prior to applying at Borders I had been working grocery. I am pretty much a book-worm, computer nerd, rock and roll fan type, and I thought coming to work for Borders would give me the chance to discuss and sell a product that I have a passion for. I just had all I could take as Customer Service in a grocery store. I wont miss the days of going outside to help the baggers push carts, because they cant get it through their skulls that you have to push in more than 3 carts at a time. Or the 2,000 dozens of eggs busted all over the floor, because no other employees will lift a finger to clean up the mess (or even block it off with a floor cone for christs sake). Or the "snow scares" that take every employee off the sales floor, and put them on a register while hysteric customers pack their carts as full as they can get them, and then ask "Is someone available to put these in my car for me?". The list could go on and on lol. Id much rather recommend and sell books, and/or music, and work around people who actually take time to read and enjoy it. Thanks again, take care guys.
Booky:
Good luck with that!
