I realize this is a union site, but I could really do with some advice.
I am very frustrated and upset over a friend’s recent verbal harassment he received from his manager at his Waldenbooks store. I feel strongly he was being pushed out / force to quite due to age discrimination.
He is so fearful of losing this job and the stress is killing him to stay, since he’s been a Waldenbooks employee for many years he’s thinking about walking just due to the verbal abuse of this store manager.
The district manager would never listen or believe the store manager would speak like this to another employee, besides this store manager would lie in a heart beat to save his sorry ass.
Other employee also get spoken to at times the same way, but are also fearful of losing there jobs, so they would never go on record to say the store manager also speaks to them the same verbal abusive way.
Is there a person in corporate I could recommend he speak with or mail a letter to?
Is there anyone who will listen and take action on this – or is it a typical retail situation of the peons will always get treated like dirt, that sucks.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated-
Thanks,
Juan.R
your friend has the power to fight this boss. he has the protected right to come together with other people at his job and fight this boss.
under federal labor law "concerted activities" anything that's done with more than 1 person that's done to improve your working conditions is protected negotiation.
please contact your local iww and see if they can help you fight this boss.

Don't tolerate this. I don't know what are of the country your in so i can't tell you who to talk to. If your DM won't listen go to the RM or HR. I had this same problem last year. It took a little work and patience but the store manager lost her job. Don't give up. If all else fails go to the labor board.
I suggest your friend invest in a pocket tape recorder.
Get the abuse on tape, call the regional HR rep & play him/her the tape. If he gets fired, play the tape for the local press.
