I was hoping to get hired in one of the Borders stores in New York City, but I heard from a lot of people that the GM's are just nuts and can't handle the pressure anymore. Can anyone tell me if there is an actual sane GM that thinks Borders is a company worth working for? Thanks.
I'm sure there are plenty of them out there.
They tend to burn out after awhile but it's great to work for them.
On the flip side the bad GM's (even the mediocre ones) can make life hell all way round.
You could ask the employees but you might get mixed results.
The other problem is that you might hire on with a great GM only to have the BINCheads switch them on you.
Good luck.
I WAS a GM for Borders back when the Loss Prevention shit started to fly. In fact, I was a GM when there were 15 stores.
Some advice:
Can you follow rules lockstep and abandon your ability to think independently? Can you do unconscionable things that are barely legal, all in the name of shareholder profits?
Will you agree to police your employees to make sure internal theft is minimized?
Will you agree not to think for yourself? Wait for the RD (is it DM now?) to approve anything you want to do?
Smile and agree to cut hours past the tipping point? Then explain where the profits went.
If you can, and this is the appetizer menu, you'll get in the door, at least. But, watch your back.
