What will happen to all of the Borders bookstores?

We just had a beautiful new Borders open near us. However, after browsing through this forum and doing some research, I see that Borders is in a bit of financial trouble. Is this because of online book sales and if so, how will book stores in general survive?

Why are they building new Borders if the company isn't doing well?

Finally, if Borders goes under, what is anticipated to take the place of these large book stores? Will Barnes and Noble take over or will shopping for books eventually be an online only type of thing?

Like all retailers, Borders is getting hit with online competition. Look at all of the retail companies that have closed or filed bankruptcy (Linens & Things, Steve & Berrys, Sharper Image, etc). Have even heard that some malls are struggling to keep open because of the economy.

yea the stock of borders goes down every day, only 4 dollars a share, own this company for next to nothing. my borders stock at one time was worth 25 dollars a share so i've lost a lot of money dealing with borders. the stockholders are not to happy right now. will any of the stores that our suppose to open open? the lawyers will make lots of money. breaking contracts and leases is not good business. wall street is watching. i feel bad for all who invested.

I heard a wild rumour that Oprah was interested in buying Borders.

Frankly I doubt it.

I think Borders is looking at closing about 25% of its stores just to stay afloat. The new stores will stay open because they all have the new digital centers and Borders.Com right in the stores. The very few stores slated to be opened will open because of the same - the new format.

Payroll costs more than lawyers.

When Jones took over Target, there were a bunch of Target store closings, if I remember correctly.

I think she waiting for it to go to a dollar a share. which i think won't be long. the rumour and the word on the streets of new orleans is the lease in Metaire was for ten years and it runs out soon. so metaire is gone. all the stock holders that live uptown our now planing to dump there stock in the next week. they don't like being mad fools of. carpetbagers never made it on St Charles Ave.
