Your overall performance is not in compliance with Company policies and/or standards of conduct, including but not limited to the following
On Tuesday June 3, Dylan acted out in a very unprofessional manner. Dylan repeatedly used very profane, vulgar and abusive language towards associates Charlene Johnson and raxchelle drake. In addition Dylan threatened to call mayor Nagin and Times Picayune editor Susan Larson and tell them not to do business with Borders. He also added that he would place a billboard in front of the stire and lead a boycott. later that afternoon dylan started screaming and ranting on the sales floor to newly hired GM Ryan Lloyd. Dylan repeatedly stated that Borders is a stupid company and stupid the way it operates. Customers were standing nearby and could easily hear him.
On June 18, while (Sales manager) Travis williams was working at his desk Dylan stood over Travis and yelled about his stock and that the company is failing. Dylan screamed and yelled in a very threatening and hostile manner that caused Travis williams to fear for his safety. On Monday june 2, Dylan has reapeatedly failed to perform basic tasks assigned by Sales Manger Travis williams. Travis assigned him a simple task to flush and organize the blue ray DVD's Dylan repeatedly ignored his instructions and failed to comply. On Wednesday June 4 Travis assigned Dylan a task to fill a CD end cap per company instructions amd once again Dylan failed to comply. Supervisor Rachelle Drake was instructed by GM to print out a punch detail report and noticed that Dylan has repeatedly violated schedule guidelines by clocking in repeatedly before his shift begins Sat 5/17 Dylan clocked in at 8am was scheduled for 9am. Wed 5/28 Dylan clocked in at 8am and was scheduled for 9am. Tues 6/3 Dylan clocked in at 7:41am and was scheduled for 9am. Wed 6/4 Dylan clockedin at 7:41 and was scheduled for 9am. Rachelle allowed Dylan to clock in at 8 and he ignored her and punched in early anyway. On May 26, Rachelle drake posed a note near the time clock that clearly stated that payroll hours must be adhered to in order to meet company payroll guidelines.

Re Termination of james Stansbury
Dear mr Beaver
I have been a loyal and faithful employee of bordersfor ten years. I take my job very seriously. I haVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY SUPERVISORS IN THE PAST, NOR HAVE THEY HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH ME. I earned the Dave Carpenter Award for customer sevice in 2006. My record and my customers speak to thes facts.
I began having a personality conflict with Rahman Muhammad within the first few days of his arrival as General Manager. Itried from the beginning to keep the best interests of my store in mind and I gave him the benefit of the doubt with respect to what I suspected was a racial element in our conflict. Despite my attempts at defusing the tension, it continued to escalate.
That being said, here's my version of what happened. With respect to my comments concernoing involving the mayor of New Orleans, the Times- Picayune newspaper, billboard and protests, Rahman totally misconstrued what I was saying. My intent was to suggest that he begin communicating with the city and the media about the plans for developing the St Charles avenue store. I told him that I attended high school with Mayor Nagin and that my personal connection might be useful in cutting through the red tape. I also suggested a billboard advertising the new location.
The reason that I mentioned protests is because of my long-standing, deep relationships with many of the musicians in New Orleans. there has been widespred discussion of the way local musicians have been treated by Borders and I was attemping to warn Rahman that he was risking alienating the local musians' community if he didn't change the way he was dealing with them. I can provide you with the names and contact info for numerous well-respected local artists who will attest to these facts.
Turning to my tone and the suggestion that I was threatening, used profane language and acted unprofessionally, let me make one thing perfectly clear. I neverengaged in any unprofessional behavior in front of customers. I respect them too much to stoop to that level.
Hover, I do not respect Rahman and feel that he has been driving the store into the ground. These facts are documented with various e-mail communications and, i suspect, with sales. He continually disrespected my knowledge and experience. As the tension escalated over several months, cival discussion began to deteriorate. what Rahman describes as unprofessional conduct was a case of him misconstruing my passion for Borders and my work as threats. I admit that I could have handled the situation better. I admit that I can be load, which is a by-product of hearing loss. But I never, ever threatened anyone.
Concerning my work hours and punching in, I don't consider myself to be an hourly employee despite my status as such. I never tried to pad my hours and have consistently helped customers on my own time. It seems that a company such as Borders would greatly prefer an employee who arrives early for every single shift in order to asses what is required for the day rather than one who consistently arrives late.
I realize that checking the schedule is my resposibilty and that I should have been aware that my hours had changed. I take myt responsibilties on Tuesday (new release day) vert seriously since I have regular customers who arrive when the doors open at 9 am to get the new releases. The claim that I ignored Rachelle is inaccurate. She told me about the new hours after I had already punched in This is documented on my time card. I immediately punched out and then pinched back in at the correct time. I did not ignore her in any way. Once I realized my new hours, I punched in each day at the correct time. The onlyexcuse for this confusion is my dedication to my job.
Finally, ther are numerous errors in my perfomance discussion record as submitted by Rahman. my name is written incorrectly. The dates of some of the instance are wrong- for instance, I don't even work on mondays. travis was not aware of the multimedia action list for fronting blu-ray discs, which led to confusion on my responsibilities. With respect to filling the Cd end cap, I fulfilled my responsibilty immediately after I got the signage from Travis.
In conclusion, I never received a written warning concerning my behavior. Since the whole situation is a product of miscommunication and the fact that I have been a loyal and exemplary employee for ten years, indicates that i was terminated based on personal feeling. I feel I am a great asset for Borders and many people in the community see me as the face of Borders
When I saw your recent posts all I could say was "he's back"....
Dylan, enough please. Get on with your life and stop beating this dead horse. You've lost any sympathy on this forum. The more you talk, the more I am sure Borders was right in firing you.
I was a GM the year Dylan won the Dave Carpenter award. I met him at the GM meeting. When we first saw him around the hotel, everyone was asking, "who's the crazy guy running around the hotel"? Then we found out he was a bookseller. All I could do was thank God he wasn't one of mine.
I sold more books and Cd then both of you and both of you have no idea what new orleans is like. You say I was crazy why because I was wearing something the was New Orleans. If I recal I got Ryko to come back to new orleans and they were very happy with the fact that New orleans wanted them back. Duckbooks are you to scared to give your real name, I'm the one that got Anderson Cooper to coime and do a signing in our store which happened to do very very well. My style is very well known. Do any of you have work in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame? So it true if your not like you get rid of him. Y'all will never make it in New Orleans.
Dylan, when you are writing like you were in the letter appealing your firing or like you were in your first two posts to these forums, you should be more careful when you mention the colour of people's skin. What you might not see is that when people read the things you write, and you qualify an erstwhile boss's hires as "black" or an apparent personality conflict as "racial", some may conclude that you are assuming your readers are all white or caucasian or European and become really offended, as I rather felt.
You really need to be more careful not to come across as cryptic when you mention race, or your idea of same, also. Most persons who have work experience comparable to yours where years of service is concerned have had to deal with having a boss who is new and seems not to care about doing important things. But if you take it upon yourself to infer just from the colour of someone's skin that they're part of some bigger agenda, you'll ultimately be proven wrong at least some of the time. For all I know, the guy might have really disliked you; might have thought you a redneck. Does that mean that every last one of the persons he hired that had a different colour skin to your own also disliked you or feared you? When you judge people by their colour and what it appears to tell you about their circumstances, and when there's no one but yourself to keep you in check whilst you're doing, you may later find that you can explain your subsequent actions with, at best, difficulty.
Dylan, how did you manager to travel to Vegas if things are sooooooo bad?
Sorry, that should have been manage, NOT manager....
I was paid to get a photo of mine of Little Richard to Bob Dylan at the Hard Rock Casino. Remember a Lot of people like my work. They also purchased it for their collection. Also I was negotioning a showing of some of my photo work. And also finding out that what HR said was a lie. I checked out the concept store too. Funny the employee seemed to like talking to a Dave Carpenter winner.
Sounds like you have a new profession. Go for it Dylan, and leave us alone, please.... Tired of your crap.
"Crap" could be a mild way of putting it! I did wonder a few months ago if there was some possibility of a spoof: either someone just playing with the computer, or someone mimicking a co-worker who is none the wiser. (I still work with persons who consciously reject the 'web). At one point there was the thread where I suggested posting on "livejournal", because it reaches many more people, and the reply stated that yes, Dylan had followed up with a visit to the "iworkatborders" forum and found George Jones' comments of particular interest. Precisely what could he have meant?
So is there actually a "Dylan" and if so, is it he (I'm merely assuming male) who is doing the various posts to these forums?
If the posts are real, then certainly, at least some of Dylan's coworkers had what amounts to a Federal case against him. Therefore it's a potentially better situation if the posts are fake.
Still it seems to me that the posts have versimilitude. (I'm just not sure from whence it comes). Persons who have some commitment to organising for better economic conditions at work could do worse than take notice.
Making a union possible is about more than getting a majority of persons to vote against the status quo. You've got to reach individuals, including persons whom you might not see as monsters, but whom you believe genuinely do not deserve to be doing a job comparable to yours.
(Please pardon my English here, Veteran: I'm using the second person because it is easy).
Why is this? Well, look no further than Dylan's writings on this site. Dylan's situation had to really mean something to him, or he would have not permitted himself to believe that there was any possibility of being reinstated in it. We're capable to varying degrees of neglecting our principles, but one cannot accuse Dylan of not being conscious of representing his employer to the public, to persons he wouldn't otherwise have known.
Still not a few are not buying it now as, perhaps (once the post by an attendee at a conference who possibly saw Dylan in person is taken into account), then: the reason for that is I think pretty obvious. It meant so much to Dylan to have a Fortune 500 company behind him. He equated greatness [I can't find the right word, "excellence" is glib] at what he was doing with working where he worked. Only that could account for the sense of loss that he experienced in recent weeks.
That's why I say "vraisimilitude". The book superstore in reality has a way of sucking in persons who have expectations of their employer that many would consider nothing less than abnormal. Their attrition from higher education extends back a very long way and could well be permanent. They may lack the life experience that is necessary to successfully retrain for a career. Persons that are part of my generation, that put so much effort into becoming less judgemental than our elders were, might not become uneasy around such individuals until the realization sets in that the job satisfaction of a co-worker like Dylan hangs as it were by a thread.
Let me elaborate. According to Dylan, he was riding high from anything to three to ten years (I fear, maltreating a lot of persons along the way because of the colour of their skin without being punished for doing, too). He won a prestigious award and received it at a conference presided over by MDs and attended by middle management. This was accomplished by molding the "superstore" to the community where it was located. It seems to me that according to Dylan's adversaries, that is to say the authors of the termination form which was posted here, Dylan did absolutely anything he wished for a long time. When they call him on punching in on the quiet, he comes out and he says that his outlook on his job is that of a salaried worker and not of an hourly one.
All that means to me is that Dylan is looking for the kind of situation where one takes something one has -- in some lands, that's a PhD -- and puts it to work. The job and what one is putting into it ultimately amount to one and the same because of one's background. It's easy for some to attain that, not so easy for others; and some have to try several times, in the course of decades. But there is nothing like a book "superstore" job to impart the illusion of such an attainment!* The store's very inventory may be part, even a substantial part, of the key. All one's got to do with it is the same thing that customers presumably do consequent on their purchases. And if the years pass, and one can't, or doesn't do? That's precisely where the dissatisfaction takes hold and the tragic figures begin to emerge, as one has seen Dylan emerge since June in the various posts that I simply hope weren't really true.
"Dylan" isn't unique; I don't think he's even aberrant. He's just a possibility that one is extremely unlikely to find in a library or down the antiquarian's. Be assured that there are organising scenarios where the ability to understanding the needs (excluding the need for a workplace where minorities are viewed, at best, as fodder for the entertainment industry, and then only if their abilities are held to be exceptional) of co-workers like Dylan will prove a factor (if a small factor) in the bargaining unit's chances of succeeding and of staying successful.
*an attainment that, certainly in some lands and as far as I know, in America, is the norm amongst persons who reap the rewards of being middle class for at least part of their lifespans
All I can say is "huh?"................
