outside management

Has anyone noticed that corporate seems to be hiring a tremendous amount of "outsiders" to be in upper management positions? Do you think it is a way to start purging those of us that have been around the company longer than 5 years, because we make too much money, (ha ha), and have too much vacation?!
Seems that lately several of us have been receiving PDR's and have been aggressively pursued to cut our hours. Especially full-timers...

This post was submitted as a news item. I've moved it to the forum.

greetings ktc, I was wondering about "upper managment" in your post. Do you feel that GMs are being hired from outside with no Borders/Walden experience? DMs,RMs? Or are you refering to Gregs cronies with all that salient grocery/drugstore experience?. Or are you refering to Binc support staff at the home office? we now have atms;how long before there's a florist to compliment our sidelines? or silk flowers so there's no spoilage. there you go: another profit from ideas at no additional charge.

revolving hotdogs and a slurpie machine

Yes it seems any of the upper management positions at BINC are never posted for open recruitment. In addition, many of these positions are newly created with a specific canidate (friend) already slotted for the position.

Perhaps we can put an espresso machine and bottle beverage dispenser at the registers, along with the floral arrangements and foot spa kits.

Our "outside" gm came in about 6 months ago with word from our dm that she wasn't going to change much since she really wants a dm job. Well moral is lower than ever. She hates the music and kids department[even though kids is one of the highest in district and country]. She hates parttimers. Her comment to me was"anyone who works less than 12 hours a week cannot possibly know what's going on". She gave everyone an adequate review! I've never had anything less than great. Apparently to boost moral, Borders is doing that but supposedly it means we got a "B" not a "C". Storytime, even though they get about 40 people, are supposed to cut down as short as possible. Apparently the people on the floor, including management, can't handle the info desk for 15-30 minutes! She doesn't understand that these customers come back without their children to buy things.Everyone is so down and ready for new jobs. Our store is one of the best in the country marks wise and yet we're very down moral wise. It took her two weeks back from a managers meeting to post a pizza fest since we are doing so well. The best ending to this, SHE doesn't know how to work a registar!!!!!! How does someone work retail and not know how to work a registar and then have the nerve to say the parttimers don't know what's going on in the store. We have many loyal customers who make working at this store all worth it,but maybe not for long if she doesn't leave soon. And what if they don't put our am in place of her, maybe another outsider!

Our new GM doesn't read.....at all!!! Bookstore....Books.....what's the problem with this picture??

Anyway....the nastywiches are bad enough for the moral.

Ah, yes...Borders Boutique, Miscellany and Curios. This stuff is a lot easier to recommend to a clueless clientele. No one needs a college degree or even advanced reading skills to sell stuff in a gift shoppe. Is that what we are left to suppose?
