Am I a glorified keyholder?

Hey, if there are any Asst. Managers our there I need some advice. Some good advice, not any of the condescending crap I've read lately. I'm hoping someone has been in this position before...My crazy new SM is telling me that I'm NOT a manager and won't allow me any freedom to do the job that is desrcibed in the AM Training Manual. They are so paranoid that I want their job that I can't say boo without asking about it first. I've been told by some other SMs in my district that I should keep letting out the rope because there is no way to run the show by yourself. This may be true but in the mean time ALL the work is being delegated to me and the employees while said SM sits in the back room for 6 hours a day doing "paperwork" ie:talking on a cell phone to relatives. If papework was actually getting done, I doubt we would have failed our last audit! Not to mention I thought Waldens was a lead by example kinda corp...like the SM UPT (in place of PR thank god)should be as good or better than the rest of us? Am I wrong?

May I also add - after reading some other comments on this site - that I have a brand spanking new DM that I haven't even met yet. I don't think my first impression should be a bitch about my manager?! Also, my last SM had a restaurant background, same as myself. Maybe I'm just used to an SM that actully WORKS 40+ hours a week and gets in the trenches shelving, merchandising, ringing in customers and SELLING stuff! HELP!!!!

Wow, I guess it's just human nature to feel better about posting your woes for all to see... In the mean time I have purchased " How to Work For an Idiot" by John Hoover. I highly suggest it and would you like some Lindor Balls to go with it...they are four for a dollar : )

what's glorified about it? get ready to have your title stripped. once they prove they can run the store with a manager sitting in the back that maybe knows how to open a DC, they'll decide they no longer need AMs. AMs in our store were always an important part of the team. we were able to cover a lot of bases with our manager. now they are moving in a manager who's following the party line, an "associate" who know's what she's doing and the people in place are also being stripped of "power," responsibility and dignity. too bad if your feelings are rubbed the wrong way. sign this reaffirmation of your duties, work all the night shifts, forget about your other obligations, all heil to whoever's in charge.

Welcome to my world.

I've been doin the same thing for a year or so now. Manager sits in the back, blah blah blah. The company isn't worried about the bottom line, they're LOSING money with this lazy ass manager and they'd get their money's worth if I was running the store. But no.

I love corporate America.

Good luck, Tiberius.

If it really is getting intolerable, you can complain. However... I agree with rocketg5 in this: be VERY careful how you go over your manager's head. In my experience, this company follows the maxim "No good deed goes unpunished." Watch yourself, and make sure you keep your personal figures up so they can't turn around and use them to push you out. CYA at all times.

Otherwise, if you *can* stand it, let the manager hang him- or herself, ask your keyholders and co-workers to pitch in (assuming you have a good team in place) and just do the best you can. You certainly aren't alone! And you mention that other managers have given you encouragement-- that's a good sign. :compress:

I wonder if we work in the same store?

Seems to be a common theme. We have had a lot of turnover amongst keyholders and managers in our store. About half the people who had "manager" somewhere in their job title sat in back doing "paperwork" and managing their personal phone calls.

Work hard, and maybe you will get a computer generated paper certificate to hang on the wall somewhere. You sure won't get any raises.

Whats wrong with being a Keyholder?
