Florida Minimum Wage Law Passes

One of the bright spots in this election was that Florida passed a higher minimum wage law. Beginning six months from now, the new minimum will be $6.15 per hour.

By my count, there are 12 states with minimum wage laws higher than the federal minimum: WA, OR, CA, IL, DE, ME, VT, MA, CT, RI, HI, AK. You can check this out at this link:

This ballot resolution passed with 71% of the vote in Florida in a state where Kerry got 47% of the vote.

Damn those ACTIVIST voters!! What can the Republicans do to stop them?

This may be the way to force companies to pay a living wage and to circumvent a government that is beholden to corporate interests. The people in municipalities, counties, and states can band together to demand economic justice via referendum. Take the city of San Francisco--as was noted here in the news section--as an example: the voters said that people needed to earn at least $8.50/hr to live in this city. Did businesses leave? Did Borders close? No.

A lot of businesses [well, at least restaurants] have added surcharges, though, and state on the menu that it's due to the minimum wage increase. I'm sure those surcharges more than make up for the few dollars they're forced to pay due to wage increases.

It's so ridiculous...8.50 is nowhere near a living wage for San Francisco in the first place.

I'm surprized that got through the voting machines.
