dear folks ; i would LOVE to get a job at borders , have made several online applications , maybe i am not passing the lengthy online test...? what kind of test is that? after 30 pages, all the questions sound alike! please HELP me with some advice on how i can pass the darned test!please.....thanks
Take it approx. three more times. HR managers generally like to get about a half dozen application from every applicant. It really streamlines the process.
I'm a long-time employee who has always received great reviews. I took the test and scored something like 5% which would make me ineligible for hire.
We've had employees who scored high and turned out to be flaky and great employees who scored much lower. The only thing I like about this system is that it organizes all the applicant information and makes the hiring process a little easier. I'm disappointed in the company for requiring a test like this and I don't think it's necessarily giving us better employees. (People should score points just for completing this thing by the way. Aside from entering all the usual application info there are over 200 questions! We're supposed to tell people it takes 20 minutes but it took me well over an hour.)
I'm not sure exactly what they're looking for. I gave myself high marks on the questions about leadership but the results said I wouldn't be a good leader. Was I not supposed to be so confident?
There were questions about my social life. Am I outgoing at parties? Would I rather go out or stay in? I'm not, and I'd rather stay in, so my profile said I'd be less likely to approach customers, which is completely untrue.
How about questions like, "Are there some people that you just can't stand?" Well, yeah, but I'm guessing you shouldn't say so on a job application. Unless they know most people who say no are lying...hm...
If you score very low, your app is tossed out immediately. We aren't allowed to even consider it. But there are other factors.
Is your availability good? The more days & hours you are available the better. It also helps to be open to any position. Don't specify that you want to be a supervisor, inventory team member, etc. unless that is really the ONLY job you would consider.
Did you not list references? Have you had a lot of jobs? Are there gaps in your employment? These things can count against you.
It could also be nothing you're doing wrong. Maybe the store isn't hiring at the moment. Maybe you said you wanted a full time position and they were only looking for part time or vice-versa. Or maybe you just didn't answer your phone at the right time! I've often needed to hire someone ASAP, had half a dozen good applicants, and set up interviews with the 3 who answered their phones.
If it's been a while you might want to try again. The applications stay in our system for a while, but most people who are looking for applicants probably don't dig too deep unless they've exhausted all the more recent possibilities.
You might also want to call or go by the store and let someone know how interested you are. If there are several good applicants that would set you apart. If they aren't hiring at the moment you could ask that they keep you in mind.
You might also ask if there was a reason you weren't considered...for instance, maybe you said you couldn't work Friday & Saturday nights and they really need someone to work weekends. Is that negotiable?
Can you absolutely not work then or is it a preference? Or maybe you said you have no retail experience but you could explain what other experience you have that would make you a good employee.
The end of August, start of September when people go back to school and often have to cut their hours is a good time to apply. Ditto the winter holidays. (stores start hiring for the holidays in October or Novemeber and good temps are often asked to stay on when postions are available.)
Good Luck!
I have heard that the only way to get to an interview is to answer the questions as if you were a bootlicking choirboy who had never heard of nasty old things like drinking, smoking, or drugs. You should also sound super-personable and outgoing.
I'd recommend applying at any of your local fast-food purveyors. The pay will definitely be higher (where I live anywhere from 75 cents to a dollar an hour more than Borders' starting wage) and working conditions will probably be a whole lot better even if you're car-hopping for someplace like Sonic!
As a new Border's employee (hired in April), you have to give them the answers that they want to hear. The "bootlicking choirboy" approach is definitely the way to go. I answered that way and got a call the same day. My friend answered honestly... heard nothing... took it again the right way... and got an interview. That's the way to do it.
i was with Borders for 5 years. 2 as a supervisor, 3 as the sales manager. It was my job to go through the apps.
They ask the same 20 questions 10 different ways. seriously. they're looking for inconsistancies in answers, which supposedly show honesty and truthfulness as well as deception. open availability, willingness to do any job and a good personality are important. an interest in books and music is very good. though not one other manager nor the gm read. i loved my job and the creative, overeducated people i worked with. what a
talented, hard working, underappreciated bunch of people they were. when i was fired, 5 people including 2 supervisors left in 2 weeks.
i miss all of them. I wish you all the best and hope that someday your true valure will be recoconized.
Well it looks like you really want that job, I am not familiar with the test but I can tell some general advises: gather as many informations as you can about your employer, study it and prepare for the interview. Be confident, the test shouldn't be that hard.
