How many Manga titles do we need?

I work IPT at a Borders and am constantly having to deal with problems in manga. Every week, there are 5-7 new titles in this latest craze from Japan. We receive somewhere between 5-15 copies of these new titles and overstock is very much discouraged. The storylines of these manga are very similar to romance books, same stories with different names. Mostly, we have these teen mangarats who tend to spend anywhere between 2-5 hours a day lounging around reading the manga books discarding the books on the floor when they are finished unless they take a shining to the book in which case the book disappears no matter what security precautions we take. I do hear customers mention that we have the largest selection of manga to be found anywhere but what good is it if it is just for instore reading. I understand we must cultivate a pleasant atmosphere for customers so that they will come back, but these mangarats are not our target customers as they do not buy much if anything but add to our shrink. And now we have to find room for assorted manga paraphernalia such as dolls, t-shirts, wall scrolls, ect... that is better merched at games and hobby stores who can devote the time and room to such endeavors.

Couldn't have said it any better myself, Meets. I'm not at all sure what the point re: sales may be when the manga section is a public library and steal-these-books venue basically. Yes, my store's manga sales have increased some, and yes, Borders does carry more manga than absolutely any other store where I am. But to what end?

We also have nowhere the least bit effective to display and possibly sell all the manga-related crap we're getting. Some of it is really nice stuff, but it makes about as much sense for us to have all these damn t-shirts, stuffed characters, and bags as it does to sell those repulsive catapult things that are worthy only of Spencer's Grossout Stores.

When I look at the random selection of sidelines - excuse me - of Gifts & Stationary that we have to carry now, I'm reminded of a certain singing fish.

Billy Bass!! What a fiasco! Our whole vestibule was filled with them, so whenever someone walked in the door they'd be greeted by 50 fish singing and flapping, just out of sync enough to make you .

The manga doesn't bother me because half of it is in overstock (it won't all fit) ... I think everybody in the company besides whoever's spearheading the effort to get the stuff in stores is in agreement that its a problem, so no one expects it to sell any better. Easiest shelving job in the whole store, takes about five minutes to see if it will fit and another five to throw it in overstock.

Overstock is a dirty word in my store. It drives the GM even crazier than normal. I am expected to fit it ALL on the shelves provided to me plus am expected to make sure it stays in pristine order which is hard when you work with a bunch of people who would rather use the title on the spine as reference instead of that Binc sticker that provides all of the information needed to shelve it correctly. If I have to reshelve aquarian age Juvenile Orion one more time from the J section to the A section, I'm going to recommend our store's landlord that he put a clocktower right outside our store for a nice sunny Tuesday afternoon. The only plus to the manga is the very nice looking college girls that drape themselves over the chairs to read the books... at least I hope they are college age.

well, i can give you the answer to this one. our(heh-heh) YOUR, genius buyers worked a deal with the manga publishers(or rather had a deal worked on them) that if they wanted dj milky's new opus(with c. love no less, and i'm using this as an example, it wasn't about this particular mange, er..manga) they had to commit to say, 5 of each in the run. or 10 if it was something hot.not what you need or can sell, but what the publisher says you need to take to be able to carry this title.ah smart move.corner the manga market from ann arbor.sweet. well, with ipt's copious amounts of spare time they can constantly go through the manga backstock.

I use to think that the manga titles were a waste until I did some tracking of the sales and price points. I was at a flagship store and had been asked to move the manga section to another part of the store because it did not seem to be selling. After looking at sales for that subject code I relized that Manga was a growing area in the store (Sales and Titles) and was trending to get larger. To top it off the cost to produce the books is similar to the production of other Mass markets and the Mark up is much higher, averaging ~$11 a book. That is a pretty large chunk of change.

I can't tell you how many times I've rung up a over a hundred dollars worth of manga for one person (often for our employees).
We have a couple of hardcore manga fans working for us and they make sure the section has all the space it needs and is well taken care of (it's on our high shrink catagory so every third book is chickleted).
We've done so well that we are one of the test stores for untranslated manga.
I know that isn't true in every store but I assure you that if it's properly handled manga is a real money maker.
Of course that means not just taking whatever BINC slings your way but making sure there are complete sets.

From what I could tell, a lot of people would return manga titles after they were finished reading them. I know they would do that to me a lot when I was at register.

the problem with manga is that the titles we carry for the most part are ment for younger children with teh few mature titles thrown in. so the taget demographic is one who maybee on average is able to afford 1 book a month. the other problem wtih manga sales is we have a very poor selection in our anime dvd section to support the growing trend of anime to manga or manga to anime. i mean i work in a store where you can read volumes 2 5 and 6 of any particular series and then have to spo the ones before or in between.same witht he anime on dvd, if we made sure to carry the first few of each series it would be better. as an anime fan myself i never jump into the middle of a series if im going to collect it,so why should we suspect people new to the genre to do so?

We have Manga crap coming out our
wazoo. But it is a very strong
seller in our store. Draws lots
of young people. But we do have
a shrink problem with it. Just
now we need all the sales we can
get.
